Shadow Island and nature trail
The history of Varjakka is colourful and full of local stories. The area is home to an internationally rare sawmill mill that has been designated as a nationally significant cultural environment. It is located just over 20 kilometres from the centre of Oulu.
Varjakan Island, which was a shipyard and repair yard in the 19th century, enjoyed its golden years in the early 20th century, when the island was home to the largest sawmill in the Nordic countries, the Varjakan Sawmill, owned by Uleå Oy. Varjakan Island and Varjakka on the mainland formed a sawmill community that employed at best around 700 workers!
Today, Varjakan Island is a wooded, scenic destination. During the summer, you can reach the island from Varjakan's guest marina by boat or on a hand-powered kapulalos, which has an old-fashioned atmosphere. You can explore Varjakan Island on your own or by booking a guided tour. In the Varjakan area you will also find a beach, a marina and the Varjakan Art Trail.
To the south of Varjakansaari is the Akionlahti nature reserve, where migratory birds stop to rest. There is a nature trail, a bird tower and a campfire site.
